Wakefield golfers place sixth at states

In a week or two, the Wakefield girls golf team's sixth-place finish in the NCHSAA state 4-A golf championships will be remembered fondly, explained Lady Wolverines' coach Rick Riggleman.

But Tuesday night — following their second round — the Lady Wolverines weren't celebrating with their finish.

Call it the curse of expectations.

"If they had played well, I think they would have been happy with a sixth-place finish, but there is no way they were pleased because they didn't play as well as they would have liked," Riggleman said. "In a couple days they will realize what a great season they have had."

Three Wolverines, Leesville's Fuqua
to play in championships

Just one day after playing in last week's 4-A NCHSAA Eastern Regional — and helping the Wakefield girls golf team place second overall — Lady Wolverines Morgan Schultz and Stephanie Pribonic were already doing their homework for Monday's state championship.

After school Wednesday, the duo drove down to Foxfire Village and squeezed in a practice round at the Foxfire Resort (West) Golf Course, site of this year's 4A state championships.

Schultz, the Cap-7 Conference Player of the Year, came away impressed with the course, and noted one striking contrast to the previous day's event at Chapel Ridge.

"It was a lot different at Foxfire because the greens were a lot slower," the freshman pointed it.

Wakefield golfers crowned champions
Schultz wins Player of the Year honors

Halfway through Tuesday's Cap-7 Conference girls golf season finale at The TPC at Wakefield — her final league match in a stellar four-year career — Wakefield senior Katie Yelle was struggling mightily.

Bogeys filled up her scorecard early, and she couldn't seem to break the trend.

"I was having a rough round to say the least, and I don't know what it was," she shrugged.

But when Yelle turned for a comforting piece of advice from Lady Wolverines' golf coach Rick Riggleman, he offered none to the upperclassmen.

"He actually told me to not be such a freshman," Yelle laughed.

Wakefield golf wins again; Pride in battle for second place
Yelle earns low medalist honors

While the Wakefield girls golf team has all but engraved its name on the Cap-7 Conference title — the Lady Wolverines' win at Hedingham Golf Club Tuesday was their sixth consecutive victory — there is plenty of competition to watch at next week's league finale.

Following its second-place finish Tuesday, Leesville Road staked a one-point advantage over Broughton in the team standings heading into Tuesday's match at the TPC at Wakefield.

Although only bragging rights are on the line — there is no playoff or postseason bid on the line — it should be fun to watch.

Wakefield golfers fight to fifth victory

For the fifth time in five Cap-7 Conference matches, the Wakefield girls golf team's depth proved, well, too deep for its rivals to overcome.

In Wednesday's match at Olde Liberty Golf Club in Franklin County, the Lady Wolverines shot a combined score of 127, defeating second-place finisher Leesville Road by eight strokes and clinching its fifth-straight league victory.

Schultz, Yelle lead Wakefield to another victory

Having already completed her golf round Tuesday afternoon, Wakefield freshman Morgan Schultz waited impatiently outside the Wildwood Green clubhouse for her teammate Stephanie Pribonic to appear.

For the past few minutes, the ninth-grader had done the math in her head, and realized the Lady Wolverines — with a good score from Pribonic —could break its school record for a round for the third time this season.

Behind Schultz's 37 — which gave her medalist honors — and Wolverine teammate Katie Yelle's 38, Wakefield had a great chance to pull off the feat again.

When Pribonic showed up minutes later, the teammates locked eyes immediately, and the first words from both girls were "What did you score?"

Lady Wolverines clinch third golf win

The Wakefield girls golf team continued its early-season roll Wednesday afternoon at Wil-Mar Golf Course in Raleigh, tallying its third consecutive match victory.

The Lady Wolverines' Morgan Schultz (41), Katie Yelle (42) and Stephanie Pribonic (44) combined to shoot a team score of 127, besting Broughton by three strokes.

Wakefield golfers set another record, claim second win

With last spring's graduation of Wakefield golfer Courtney McKim, who ruled the Cap-7 Conference for seemingly four straight years, it was widely believed the league was wide-open.

Anybody's game, really. A chance for a new face to move to the top of the leaderboard.

And it appears that fresh face is that of Wakefield freshman Morgan Schultz.

Only two league matches into her career, the ninth-grader snagged her second straight medalist honors at Falls Village Tuesday, shooting a round of 37.

Wakefield golf sets school record; Schultz earns medalist honors

Riding in a golf cart back to the Heritage Golf Club clubhouse Tuesday evening, following her first-ever Cap-7 Conference match Tuesday afternoon, Wakefield freshman Morgan Schultz studied her scorecard intently.

While she only missed par by a single stroke, scoring a round of 37, the ninth-grader admitted the extra stroke was nagging her.

When prodded by driver/Wakefield coach Rick Riggleman, Schultz could crack a smile, but her eyes always seemed to draw back to the scorecard.

"She wasn't happy," Riggleman laughed afterward. "She really wanted to make par."

While that goal will have to wait until next week, the freshman should be consoled by the fact she earned medalist honors, recording the lowest round of any player.

Depth key for Wolverines on links

This doesn't sound right.

And maybe that's because it shouldn't.

But the Wakefield girls golf team lost former state champion Courtney McKim to graduation last spring, and the Lady Wolverines return an even stronger squad this fall.

Hard to imagine, but the numbers to back it up, said Wakefield coach Rick Riggleman.
