Perfect start
Wakefield volleyball improves to 14-0 with its win Thursday

The wins keep mounting for the Wakefield volleyball team, which cruised to a straight-set victory over Broughton Thursday night.

After winning decisively in the first set, 25-16, the Lady Wolverines rallied from a 18-15 second-set deficit, scoring a 26-24 victory late. Wakefield then sealed the match in the third, pulling away 25-21.

For head coach Cynthia Terrell, the Lady Wolverines' triumph can be traced back to what her squad has done all season — give 100 percent effort, never give up and play as a team.

"We are just clicking. We have great chemistry," the coach explained. "Even when we might get behind, we don't give up, we don't falter. We find a way to come back."

A few Wakefield volleyball highlights from Thursday's win over Broughton.

Having compiled a 14-0 record, including 7-0 in Cap-7 Conference play, the Lady Wolverines haven't had to play behind too much, however. It has been everybody who has been forced to play catch-up.

Thursday's contest with Broughton was the start of the second half of conference play, meaning Wakefield is more than half way to a possible undefeated league record.

But it's not something the Lady Wolverines are addressing, Terrell said.

"We don't talk about that at all," she explained. "We just try to stay humble. Pride can get in your way, and we're not trying to get big-headed. We want to stay humble, and good things will happen."

Though Terrell explained she has high expectations nonetheless.

"We have gone through the first round [of conference play], we have seen everybody, and we know what to expect," the coach reasoned. "So there really isn't an excuse for not getting the job done. If we don't [win the conference], then it's our own fault."

If the Lady Wolverines can replicate their performance from Thursday, they should have little trouble reaching their goal. And Wakefield received several outstanding performances as Bryn Pfeiffer recorded 11 digs and three kills and Kylie Sicking added 10 digs and eight assists. Cally Pfeiffer finished with 23 assists and four aces.

While serving in the first set, Sicking and Cally Pfeiffer each put together rallies of four-straight points, setting the tone for Wakefield's win.

Katie Slay and Elizabeth Campbell scored 21 and nine kills, respectively.

Thursday's win came just two days after an impressive three-set win over previously-defeated Enloe.

The Lady Wolverines visit Bunn Monday, Sept. 28, and return to league action Thursday, Oct. 1, hosting Sanderson.

"This is one of best teams I have had in a long time in terms of chemistry, personality and getting along with one another," Terrell said. "Plus, they don't mind working hard and they don't care who gets the credit. It is a team effort for us."
