Having posted a 25-0 record heading into their postseason meeting with Enloe Saturday, members of the Wakefield volleyball have plenty to smile about.

WHS volleyball hosts Enloe Saturday
Lady Wolverines knocked off WF-R in four sets Thursday

Forgive members of the Wakefield volleyball team if they haven't realized the postseason has started.

Why the possible confusion? Well, the Lady Wolverines' schedule has had a distinct conference flavor this week.

For the second time in three days, Wakefield (25-0) will square off with a fellow member of the Cap-7 Conference, hosting Enloe (22-3) Saturday at 4 p.m.

The fourth-round state playoff game with the Eagles comes just two days after Wakefield knocked off crosstown rival Wake Forest-Rolesville in four sets (25-16, 23-25, 25-19, 25-17), staging Saturday's match.

Having played Enloe twice during the regular season — two 3-0 Wakefield wins — and again for the conference tournament championship last week — another 3-0 win — the Lady Wolverines face the Eagles for a fourth time this season.

(Wakefield's win over WF-R this week was also the rivals' fourth meeting of the season.)

Although the squads know each other well, Wakefield coach Cynthia Terrell stressed the Lady Wolverines must forget their previous contests with the Eagles.

"We have to play this game as if we have never seen them before," she said.

The Lady Wolverines enter their contest with Enloe coming off its must pressing match in nearly six weeks. For more than a month, Wakefield didn't drop a single set, but the Cougars defeated Wakefield in the second set Thursday, pulling the match even.

But Wakefield rallied back to clinch the playoff victory thanks to its good defense.

Terrell expected the match to have plenty of intensity, and it was definitely the case.

"It was turned up a notch," she said. "Of course, any time we play against Wake Forest-Rolesville it's going to be one of those really good rivalry games where both teams want to beat each other.
"But it was more than what I expected."

Grace Cho finished with 21 digs, Bryn Pfefffer tallied 14 digs and five kills and Kylie Sicking added 19 digs and 18 assists.

Cally Pfeiffer recorded 17 assists, and Catherine had 13 digs.

Elizabeth Campbell notched a team-high 21 kills, and Katie Slay added 11 kills and four solo blocks.

Saturday's winner advances to play the winner of the Greenville Rose/Wilmington Hoggard Tuesday in the state semifinals.
