With a win Tuesday over Enloe, Cally (14) and Bryn Pfeiffer and the Wakefield volleyball team will secure the program's second conference title in school history.

Wolverines eyeing perfection

For the Wakefield volleyball team, unbeaten through 19 contests this season, you'd think the Lady Wolverines' final regular-season contest Tuesday night would be stress-free.

But the so-far, so-perfect squad faces Enloe (18-1), with plenty on the line, including a share of the Cap-7 Conference title and the No. 1 seed in the league's end-of-the-season tournament.

Add in the extra emotion of senior night as well as Monday's big victory over rival Wake Forest-Rolesville, and the Lady Wolverines have a pretty full plate.

Because Wakefield defeated Enloe 3-0 in Sept. 22 meeting — the Lady Eagles' lone 2009 loss — the Lady Wolverines only need to win to take the conference title outright.

But Wakefield head coach Cynthia Terrell said her squad doesn't look at the contest any differently than the previous 19.

"We know the significance of it, but ... we're just looking at it as another game," she said. "Plus, we have a lot more that we have to do.
"They know what's at stake, and we know what's at stake, so it should be a good contest."

On the heels of Monday night's 3-0 victory over Wake Forest-Rolesville, Terrell acknowledged the Lady Wolverines were challenged. The Cougars pushed Wakefield to five sets their first meeting, adding to the rematch's intensity.

"There is just a rivalry and so much respect between the teams," she said. "But we did well with the mental part of it, capitalized on our opportunities and got the win."

Kylie Sicking recorded eight assists and nine digs in the victory. Cally Pfeiffer added 27 assists, 12 digs and two kills. Katie Slay and Elizabeth Campbell added 21 and 12 kills, respectively.

During the three-set contest, the Lady Wolverines recorded five aces to just one service error.

With only Enloe staying in the way of their first conference title since 2005, the Lady Wolverines are undoubtedly excited, Terrell said.

"Our girls are pumped, they have been for awhile," the coach said. "We are trying to be low-key, trying to be humble. We just want to go out there and play ball."

If Wakefield wins, it will be the school's first ever undefeated season in conference play. The 2005 team finished 11-1.

Winning of the conference title receives a first-round bye in the leagues' tournament, which begins Thursday, Oct. 15.
