Wakefield track shines at Boo Williams Invitational
While other people might have been setting up their New Year's plans earlier this week, the Wakefield track team was making their own preparations.
For what, you ask? On-the-track dominance.
It isn't an overstatement to say the Wolverines stole the show at the Boo Williams Winter Break Invitational in Hampton, Va., Dec. 28-29. And here's the proof: The boys bested the field of 35 teams, scoring 75 points, 23 more than second-finisher Western Branch.
And not to be outdone, the Lady Wolverines (84.50) raced their way to a second-place finish, trailing only Elizabeth Seton (111).
Trip Foreman (1:07.03) and Tye Smith (1:08.39) got the Wolverines rolling in the 500-meter dash, snagging first and second, respectively.
Foreman and teammates Denzel Brown, Tony Jones and Josh King later thwarted the competition in the 4x400-meter relay, claiming first place with a time of 3:27.63.
David Riddleberger also grabbed first-place honors in the 400-meter dash, recording a time of 52.33. He also secured a fifth-place finish in the 55-meter dash.
Mitch Mallory appears to be carrying his cross country success — fourth at the 4-A state meet — into the indoor track season, capturing first place in the boys 3,200-meter run. He finished with a time of 9:44.19, more than 30 seconds ahead of second place.
In the boys 800-meter run, Jordan Lee placed fourth.
Mallory, Lee, Wesley Neal and Nicholas Karagiannis later snagged second place in the 4x800-meter relay.
Although the Wakefield girls team failed to repeat gold like its male counterparts, the team's performance can't be overlooked.
The Lady Wolverines made most of their noise in the 300-meter dash as Ariah Graham (40.73) and Olicia Sharp (41.23) took first and second, respectively.
But the duo was just getting started.
In the 55-meter dash, Sharp pulled out the victory, finishing with a time of 7.17. Graham wasn't far behind, tying for fourth.
Sharp and Graham later led the Lady Wolverines to a first-place finish in the 4x400-meter relay, with a time of 3:57.69.
Sharp also grabbed second place in the 500-meter dash; Michaela Birek took third.
Birek finished fifth in the high jump, positing a height of five feet.
In the 55-meter hurdles, Wakefield's Chantal Scott posted a time of 8.55, capturing third place.
Alex Wells shined in the distance events, taking sixth place in the 1,000-meter run and eighth in the 1,600 meters. Devon Enderle cruised to a sixth-place finish in the 3,200-meter run.
In the pole vault, Wakeifeld's Kristin Lee, cleared nine feet, taking third place.
