King's offer list now
includes Louisville, Maryland
A few days after receiving his first scholarship offer — from SEC power LSU — last week, Wakefield junior receiver Nigel King can add two more colleges to his list of potential suitors.
In recent days, the 6-foot-3, 194-pound Wolverine has received written offers from big-time college programs Louisville and Maryland, bringing his total to three.
But that number is sure to increase in the coming weeks for the highly sought-after receiver.
"The offers will continue to grow," said Wakefield assistant coach Charles Johnson. "There are going to be a lot of people that want him. But we've talked, and I've told him not to rush his decision because he's got a lot more coming."
Johnson, who played receiver at the University of Colorado before embarking on an NFL career, said King's development is much further along than most receivers his age.
"He's skill level is at the point — if he focuses every single play — his success rate should be in the 90s," the coach said. "Now don't get me wrong, he's not going to make every single play, and catch every single ball, but he will get most of them."
While the junior must continue to work on his route running, Johnson puts King's athletic ability in a league of its own.
"He gets off the ball extremely well, and he can go up and get the deep ball," he said. "I will take him against anybody in the state on a jump ball.
"He can go up and get it, and he has soft hands, so he'll bring it down."
Although King's been sidelined with a hip injury through the first four games this season, Johnson believes the junior can pick up right where he left off last year.
"He just seems more comfortable, and that's because of the season he had last year," the coach explained.
In 2008, King amassed more than 850 yards receiving, while pulling down 15 touchdowns.
Those are the types of numbers coaches notice.
