Morgan Schultz
Wakefield golfer — freshman
You don't get to use the moniker freshman phenom too often, but the nickname definitely fits Wakefield ninth-grader Morgan Schultz. All the Lady Wolverine golfer has done is won the Cap-7 Conference Player of the Year honors as well as helped her team to the state championship. In between, Schultz helped Wakefield to a second-place finish in the 4-A Eastern Regional, and made opponents dread the next three years having to battle her on the links.
The soft-spoken Schultz took some time to talk with NorthRaleighSports.com last week before heading off to play in the 4-A state championship at the Foxfire Resort (West) Golf Course.
What's the best club in your bag? When you need a good shot what club do you use?
I should say putter because that's the most important club. But probably, I like my driver the best.
Ever hit a hole in one?
No, I wish.
Have you come close?
I've come a foot or two, but never like an inch or two.
When did you get into golf?
At first, I really hated golf. I thought it was really boring. And my dad tried to get me out to play, but I really wasn't interested.
But then, I started liking it in sixth grade.
Once I started hitting better shots, I really got into it.
If you had five minutes with a person who had never played golf, what would you tell them?
Don't underestimate the importance of your short game.
Most people think you need to spend hours at the range, but practicing your putting will help you the most.
Do you play any other sports?
I danced before golf. But I stopped to have more time to practice.
Favorite sports movie?
The Greatest Game Ever Played was pretty good.
Favorite golfer?
I actually don't watch a lot of golf. But everyone always asks me that.
If you could invite three people to dinner who would invite?
Wakefield golf coach Rick Riggleman, Morgan Pressel, and Tiger Woods
Editor's note: Pressel is the youngest-ever winner of an LPGA major tournament, and has reached No. 4 in the Women's World Golf Rankings. If you don't know who Tiger Woods is, I have no idea what you're doing on a sports Web site.
Hobby away from golf?
I always like to hang out with my friends. I also play piano.
Do you ever get tired of golf?
I don't get sick of it. Sometimes I get bored hitting at the range, and I'll want to hit out of the sand or putt. But I never get completely tired of golf because there is something I always need to work on.
If you missed seeing Schultz in action this fall, don't worry, you have three more years. That sigh you just heard was her opponents.
