Brandon McCain

Brandon McCain
Sanderson linebacker — senior

His pleasant demeanor might not show it, but Brandon McCain knows how to hold a grudge. In 2007, New Bern laid a good whopping on the Spartans, knocking Sanderson out of the first round of the state playoffs with a 48-20 victory. Two years later, McCain said hosting New Bern Sept. 18 is a game he's marked on his calendar, and the Spartans are looking to exact revenge.

As McCain sees it, there are no weaknesses on the Sanderson defense this fall. And the New Bern match-up — the final tune-up before the start of Sanderson's Cap-7 Conference opener — should be a barometer on how successful the Spartans can be.

McCain recently spoke with NorthRaleighSports.com about the Spartans' upcoming season, giving his opinion on a new coach, his stellar defensive unit and, of course, the New Bern Bears.

What is new head coach Tony Lewis like?
First of all, he is all about character. That's a big thing to him. We are really trying to turn the program around, and he isn't taking any excuses. This year we are focusing on building ourselves up, rather than tearing ourselves down.

What is the difference between this year's team and last year's 6-6 team?
We have a lot more confidence than last year. And I think we are playing a lot better as a team.

What are some keys to success this year?
We need to make some big plays. And when we have a chance to make big plays, we have to take advantage of them. Our O-line needs to block well, and our defense needs to get after it.

What guy should people watch out for on the Sanderson defense?
One guy? Our defense is pretty solid. Last year, we were lacking good corners, but not this year. I can't really find a weak spot. Pretty much everybody on defense you should watch out for.

What guy should people watch out for on offense?
Obviously [Wake Forest-commit] Matt James, but also Chris Lampkins, who can catch just about anything. Kevin Ott is really good, too. And our quarterback Sam Bauckham has gotten a lot better.

Toughest part of the first week of practice?
Probably flipping the tires, and pushing the sleds.

Is there a game on the schedule you are really excited to play in?
I'm looking forward to playing New Bern. We need to get a little revenge.
Why revenge on New Bern?
We went down there three years ago in the first round and we got ran pretty good. So we are looking for a for a little payback.

What do you think of the Cap-7 Conference this year?
I think it's going to be pretty tough. We went to the UNC camp, and Leesville won it and we took second. The conference should be pretty good.

You're a linebacker, what are Sanderson linebackers going to be know for?
We're not afraid to hit people. Our coaches even told us during 7-on-7's that we need to back off a little. We'll get after it.

Who is your biggest rival?
Millbrook. Broughton is probably second on the list.

What are you most excited about doing during your senior year?
Winning the Cap-7.
