Stumpo, Ravens post win in opener
After missing all of last season with an ankle injury, Ravenscroft junior field hockey player Sarah Stumpo certainly made up for lost time Thursday afternoon.
In the Ravens' season opener against Durham Jordan, Stumpo tallied three first-half goals, propelling Ravenscroft to a 3-0 victory.
"She certainly came out strong, didn't she?" cracked Ravens' head coach Kerry Norman afterward.
The coach praised the Ravens for remaining vocal throughout the entire game.
"The key to our game today was definitely the communication on the field," Norman said. "I could hear them talking the entire game. They knew where each other was. They were making great plays. There was beautiful passing. It was all about communication."
Sophomore keeper Catherine Green — beginning her third year on varsity — recorded the shutout.
The Ravens controlled possession for most of the game, and nearly increased their lead in the second half.
Senior Hillary Doston and junior Krissi Fajgendaum each got within striking distance, but narrowly missed scored.
Ravenscroft returns to action Tuesday, Aug. 25, hosting Chapel Hill at 5:30 p.m. The following weekend, the Ravens travel west, facing Charlotte Country Day Aug. 28 and Providence Country Day Aug. 29.
Norman expects the two Charlotte schools — which are traditionally very strong — to be an excellent test for her young squad.
"That will be a big weekend for us," she said. "They are always very good."
