Emily Bower
Millbrook setter — senior
While the Millbrook volleyball program hasn't thrived in recent years — the Wildcats haven't made the postseason since 2002 — there are signs this season could be a step in the right direction. One of the biggest positives going for the Wildcats this fall is that senior Emily Bower returns. In charge of orchestrating the squad's offense, Bower is Millbrook's most experienced player, entering her third season on varsity. She has the knowledge and skill to put her teammates in position to best help the squad. And maybe help the Wildcats past the regular season.
Bower recently spoke with NorthRaleighSports.com about the Wildcats' program as well as her expectations for 2009.
What type of program does Millbrook have?
We have the potential to be good. We have struggled a little [recently], but the potential is there this year.
What are some strengths on the Lady Wildcats?
We have some really good hitters like Awele Nwaeze. She is a sophomore, and she has a lot of potential. Plus, she can jump like a jackrabbit. And Caitlyn Shaw is another strong hitter, too.
How tough is the Cap-7 Conference in volleyball?
It is a very tough conference. There are no easy games here.
Who is the toughest team you will face this year?
Probably Broughton. They have a lot of chemistry and they run a lot of good combinations, quick plays, which is tough to play against.
What is head coach Chris Grimes like?
It really depends on how we play. He is really good at pushing people to do better. But he always knows when to back off and let you simmer down.
Have you guys talked about goals for this year?
Yeah, we definitely want to improve our record over last. I think we only had five wins. And we want to have good communication and chemistry.
How is this year's team improved?
There are no cliques, and everybody gets along really well.
Is this a playoff team?
We definitely have the talent to be up there.
Is it fun to be a setter?
It is my favorite position.
What skills make a good setter?
You have to put in more practice than anybody else. You have to get here early as well as put in practice on your own time.
Bower and the Wildcats open their season Monday, Aug. 17, at Knightdale at 6 p.m.
