Leesville comes from behind
to remain perfect in Cap-7
Through six matches against Wakefield Wednesday night, the Leesville Road wrestling team found itself facing an 18-16 deficit.
But apparently, the Pride wrestlers were right where they wanted to be, reeling off victories in six of the night's final eight matches and propelling Leesville to a 49-26 victory.
Following successful campaigns at last week's Knightdale Duals — Wakefield finished third in division 2; the Pride finished second in division 4 — both squads rolled into the match with high expectations.
In the 189-pound weight class, Wakefield's Caleb Killion and Leesville's Andrew Wascheck matched up for one the most entertaining match of the night.
Killion — a state qualifier last year — found himself down by a point to Wascheck, who's been riding a recent hot streak, according to Pride coach Jason Wyss.
While both wrestlers worked relentlessly the entire match, Killion managed to slip Wascheck's grasp with 2.5 seconds remaining in the third period, winning the match 8–7.
Wakefield grapplers scored two pins in the 119- and 125-pound weight classes, and 160-pounder Eric White used a fast-paced style to record a 17-1 victory for the Wolverines.
Leesville scored seven pins on the night, and senior Kirk Lincoln — returning to the lineup for the first time in a week — tallied another victory, defeating Wakefield sophomore Devan Caldwell 15-3.
“I was disappointed to not get the pin, but I got the win and I'm moving forward focused on qualifying for state," Lincoln said following his match.
After the match Wyss says he “had to make a couple last-minute roster changes due to not making weight which was disappointing."
The Pride coach said he is looking forward to getting his team healthy and primed to peak at the right time.
The victory moves Leesville Road to 7-4 overall and 3-0 in the league action. With the loss, the Wolverines drop to 10-6 overall and 0-3 in the conference.
