Pride tennis opens with win

It isn't an ideal situation to open the season with a conference rival, but the Leesville Road girls tennis team made the best of it Tuesday afternoon, defeating Sanderson 8-1.

While Mother Nature postponed both of its matches last week, the Pride showed no ill-effects from its schedule upheaval.

Senior co-captain, and No. 1 player, Amy Weischedel got the squad heading in the right direction, positing a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Sanderson's Claire Bennett.

Junior Alicia Busch was equally impressive, notching a 6-0, 6-1 win against Rachel Duffus.

Julianne Dragan and Bailey Wilson — also captains — recorded two-set wins Tuesday.

Emily Foulke scored a win, defeating Claire Sanderson 3-6, 6-3, 10-6.

Sanderson's lone singles win came from Courtney Trumps, who defeated Jessica Kenny 6-4, 6-2.

The Pride swept the doubles competition as well as Wilson/Busch, Foulke/Kate Medynskya and Connor Grant/Abby Boyce teamed up.

Leesville was scheduled to face Millbrook Thursday, Aug. 27, and East Chapel Hill Tuesday, Sept. 1.
