CAP-7 CONFERENCE GOLF

Wakefield golfers fight to fifth victory

For the fifth time in five Cap-7 Conference matches, the Wakefield girls golf team's depth proved, well, too deep for its rivals to overcome.

In Wednesday's match at Olde Liberty Golf Club in Franklin County, the Lady Wolverines shot a combined score of 127, defeating second-place finisher Leesville Road by eight strokes and clinching its fifth-straight league victory.

Four golfers, including Wakefield's Stephanie Pribonic, tied for low medalist, shooting rounds of 41. But the Lady Wolverines' Morgan Schultz (42) and Katie Yelle (44) finished just off the pace, lifting the squad to another victory.

Leesville's Kaity Fuqua, Broughton's JB Shavlik and WF-R's Maggie Whisnant tied with Pribonic for the lead.

Broughton (139), WF-R (153), Enloe (156) and Millbrook (164) rounded out the scoring. Sanderson played just two golfers — three are needed to factor into the team scores.

With the victory, Wakefield takes a commanding lead in the conference standings, having tallied 35 team points. Broughton and Leesville are deadlocked at 27 points, with Enloe (19) sitting in fourth. For complete results, click here.

With the conference title all but a formality, the Wolverines could be on cruise control. But Wakefield coach Rick Riggleman has said throughout the season that the squad's goals are higher. In fact, the Lady Wolverines often rate their scores against Athens Drive, the likely frontrunner for the state champion.

As for the rest of the field Wednesday, Leesville's Mary Lee Free put together her best outing Wednesday, shooting a 45.

And Millbrook's Alex Klimczyk continues to improve week-to-week, recording a round of 47.

Sanderson's Peri Wolfe posted her second-best score of the season, shooting a 51.

League action kicks back up Tuesday, Sept. 29 at Hedingham. It starts at 3:30 p.m.
