Wakefield golf sets school record; Schultz earns medalist honors

Riding in a golf cart back to the Heritage Golf Club clubhouse Tuesday evening, following her first-ever Cap-7 Conference match Tuesday afternoon, Wakefield freshman Morgan Schultz studied her scorecard intently.

While she only missed par by a single stroke, scoring a round of 37, the ninth-grader admitted the extra stroke was nagging her.

When prodded by driver/Wakefield coach Rick Riggleman, Schultz could crack a smile, but her eyes always seemed to draw back to the scorecard.

"She wasn't happy," Riggleman laughed afterward. "She really wanted to make par."

While that goal will have to wait until next week, the freshman should be consoled by the fact she earned medalist honors, recording the lowest round of any player.

According to Riggleman, Schultz is just the second freshman golfer to score medalist honors in a Cap-7 Conference match.

Who was the first? Former Wakefield golfer Courtney McKim, who won a state championship in 2007 and currently plays for the Oklahoma State University team, also accomplished the feat.

In addition to Schultz's score, the Lady Wolverines also set a school record, shooting a team score of 122 and besting Broughton by 11 strokes for first place.

Wakefield's Katie Yelle and Stephanie Pribonic put together noteworthy rounds, shooting 42 and 43, respectively.

The Lady Wolverines' Katie Michalak (51) and Rachel Yelle (58) also played, but did not score.

School record aside, Riggleman felt his girls weren't entirely pleased with their performance. Pribonic, who finished tied for fifth, even jokingly asked if a few of her strokes could be subtracted when mentioned in an article.

"To be honest, I don't think any of our girls were thrilled," the coach said. "Well, Rachel was — and she should be —because that was her first match. But the others thought they could do a little better."

Riggleman said the Lady Wolverines plan to keep the record in perspective because Tuesday's win is just the first step in the 2009 season.

"It's a school record but not a Cap-7 record," he said. "I think just last year Wake Forest-Rolesville shot a 121 or a 119. I think our girls want to continue to get better. And they have the maturity and approach to do it."

With Wakefield pulling out the win, Broughton (133), Leesville Road (142), WF-R (150), Enloe (154), Millbrook (166) and Sanderson (170) rounded out the match.

Broughton's JB Shavlik (40) placed second individually, three strokes behind Schultz.
Leesville Road's top trio consisted of Kaity Fuqua (46), Alli Mossinghoff (47) and Mary Lee Free (49). The Pride's Mariah Hopkins also recorded a round of 55.

Millbrook's leading scorer was Sarah Bashford (52), followed by Sarah Snarzyk (56), Lindsay Manuszak (58), Alex Klimczyk (59) and Bryn Gallagher (60).

Peri Wolfe (55) paced Sanderson, and teammates Najah Owens (57), Alexandra Stewart (58) and Jessica Perez (62) also competed in the league opener.

The Cap-7 Conference gets in full swing next week, with two matches scheduled back-to-back. The league is set to play at Falls Village Sept. 8 and at Wil-Mar Sept. 9.
